Audacious ...
Audacious in the same way Moby’s 1999 break-through album ‘Play’ looked back with reverence to the underground dance scene, and forward to a place where that same dance scene would position itself centrally in the fast lane of 21st century contemporary popular music, Wenallt Star’s 14 track ‘all her geese are swans’ has a swagger that also sees it looking over its shoulder to an emerging late 20th century cultural landscape where the combination of poetry, spoken word and music jockeyed for mainstream acceptance, whilst looking forward to the ever-expanding intersection between music, spoken text and the blurring of the edges between artforms and genres thus being able to capture the curiosity of a constantly evolving listening audience. Indeed, Bryan Ferry’s current collaboration ‘Loose Talk’ with artist Amelia Barrett with Barrett’s spoken texts embellished by Ferry’s musical settings, sees an alignment with ‘all her geese are swans’ as Wenallt Star dives even deeper into this collective terrain by offering both a unique, refreshing take on contemporary storytelling, presenting a sharp, focused lens on fourteen intriguing, eclectic micro-fictions.
Wenallt Star has engaged in a unique creative process and been rewarded with an entertaining, thought-provoking, tangible end product; an impressively original album that defies definition or pigeonholing.
It's 21st century storytelling by way of the cut-up technique giving birth to fourteen strangely infectious spoken texts set to music, but, hey, you decide.
